Campfire checklist

If you are a camping enthusiast, spending the night beside a campfire is likely your favorite moment during the whole camping experience. Having some BBQ over the campfire, singing a chorus with a guitar in hand, or chatting with family and friends while sitting around the campfire is always a cherishable moment. However, from my experience, I have often forgotten a few campfire items. Though I could survive without them, I always carry a mark of regret, thinking that I wouldn’t miss the items. The campfire could have been more accessible and hassle-free.

With these concerns in mind, I have made an essential campfire items list, including all the must-have items for a full-fledged campfire. You will find it at the end of this writing. Print it and keep it with you to avoid missing any item at your next campfire. So, without further ado, let’s dive into the article.

Campfire Checklist

I have sorted out a campfire checklist and also the tools I use during my campfire. Here is the list for your convenience.

Firewood

The first thing you need to start your campfire is dried logs or firewood. I usually don’t bring extra firewood with me to save space, and it’s almost impossible unless you’re planning for car camping. I manage by gathering firewood from around my campsite, and it works fine for me. However, I do bring some fire pellets or fire starters if I plan to camp in a damp area or during rainy conditions, and I suggest you do the same. Remember to bring fire pellets to make your campfire easier.

Kindling

At the beginning of starting a fire, you will need kindling. You can gather sticks from around your campsite or bring some along, as I mentioned before. Kindling is easy to start, making it useful for building a fire. Once the fire gets going, you can add larger logs to keep it burning.

Matches or Lighter

Lighter for campfire

A lighter or fire starter is essential for starting a campfire. I recommend carrying at least two so that if one doesn’t work, the other can serve as a backup. When choosing a lighter, check for features like windproof or waterproof capabilities. Also, check the fuel type and whether it’s propane-filled or electrical. My favorite is a rechargeable multifunctional electric lighter.

Fire Pit or Ring

Usually, a fire pit has a fireproof metal border to contain the fire. However, carrying a fire ring is a hassle when camping in the wild. I always dig a small hole with a diameter of 0.5 meters and use it as a fire ring. I suggest you do the same unless you’re making a campfire in your backyard.

Shovel or Trowel

As I mentioned, you’ll need a shovel to dig the soil and create a fire ring. A shovel is always essential for camping, not just for campfires.

Water Source or Sand

Safety is always the first priority. You should never leave a campfire unattended or consider it finished until it’s completely extinguished. To do this, you’ll need to keep a bucket of water nearby. If that’s not available, use sand. If sand is not available, regular soil will work as well.

Seating Arrangement

To sit around the campfire, ensure you have nice and comfortable seating arrangements. For this, you should carry quality camping chairs. When placing the chairs, maintain a safe distance from the fire.

Campfire Cooking Gear

Campfires are not just for warmth—they are also fun for grilling camping foods. To cook your food over a campfire, ensure you have the proper cooking gear, such as a hanging grill or smoker.

Safety Gloves

Handling a campfire or hot grill always carries the risk of burns. To stay safe, carry a pair of heat-proof safety gloves.

Campfire Snacks

Along with cooking gear, a good camping food menu is essential to elevate your camping experience. Be sure to bring a few ready-to-cook items or some meat pieces to make delicious steaks.

First Aid Kit

Don’t forget to take primary action immediately after any accident, so carry a first aid kit with you. A first aid kit is always a must-have for any camper, not just for fire-related incidents.

Fire Poker

Fire Poker for campfire

A fire poker is a tool used to stir hot burning logs or coals to adjust the fire as needed. I always carry a fire poker when I plan to have a campfire. A fire poker will allow you to adjust the logs from a safe distance.

Fire Starting Kit

Last Verdict

A campfire is the ultimate fun of camping. If you have all the campfire essentials within reach, you can stay worry-free. Campfire foods are also delicious. Sitting, cooking, and eating in the wild is truly adventurous. I still miss the beef BBQ from my last campfire. Hopefully, this article will help you avoid missing any campfire essentials on your next camping trip. Happy camping!
